Sacramento, CA - Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger applauded California's vintners and winegrape growers today for their economic contributions and "steadfast commitment to the highest standards of excellence" by issuing an official proclamation designating September 2006 as "California Wine Month." This is the second year that the Governor has honored the state's wine industry with a special proclamation.
"We appreciate the Governor's recognition of the wine industry as a unique and special part of California," said Robert P. Koch, President and CEO of the Wine Institute, the trade association of 915 California wineries and affiliated businesses. "From the scenic beauty of our diverse growing regions with more than 96 distinct American Viticultural Areas, to the fascinating individuals behind every California wine label, to our leadership in sustainable winegrowing, California wine truly gives Californians something to celebrate."
Wine Institute is partnering with winery members, regional winery and grower associations and retailers and restaurants to create a statewide calendar of special activities and events during the month of September. Beginning July 2006, the Wine Institute will introduce a special consumer website, http://www.californiawinemonth.com, featuring event listings and other ideas for celebrating California Wine Month and the start of the 2006 winegrape crush.
Safeway Stores will participate in California Wine Month again this year, featuring California wines in stores in 22 states. Cost Plus World Market, Beverages & More, Morton's of Chicago, P.F. Chang's China Bistro and the San Francisco Chronicle are among the other retail, restaurant and media partners planning activities during California Wine Month 2006.
