SAN FRANCISCO – Since the Spanish missionaries produced the state's first wines in the mid 1700s for sacramental use, California has attracted immigrants who have brought their native cultures, cuisines and winemaking skills. Among the early wine pioneers were the Dutch, French, Germans and Italians and later, modern day artisans and entrepreneurs—all enjoying the freedom to innovate and sharing a spirit that has made California a world leader in the wine quality revolution.

As 2011 begins, Wine Institute celebrates the extraordinary diversity of California's wine community and its long legacy of winemaking.
