Historical Wine Label Collection

This section provides a look at wine labels from the past. Whether you love old wine labels or simply like old graphics, this section gives a glimpse of the style of California's early wine labels.

Most of the labels currently shown in this section date between 1900 and 1945.

Wine Industry Pioneers

Here is a small selection of our historic collection of wine industry pioneers. The California wine industry was built by many people who belived that California had the right qualities for great winegrowing.

Julius Dressel: Julius Dresel, brother of Emil Dresel, one of the founders of the Rhine Farm in Sonoma County, succeeded his brother in 1869.Julius Dressel: Julius Dresel, brother of Emil Dresel, one of the founders of the Rhine Farm in Sonoma County, succeeded his brother in 1869.

Captain E.P. CutterCaptain E.P. Cutter: This image was taken around 1885 at the home of Captain E. P. Cutter, Sonoma California. From left: Captain E. P. Cutter, superintendent of the vineyards of the Buena Vista Vinicultural Society through the 1870's; his elder son Ephraim Cutter, who also worked for the society; Gustave Chevassus (the child); B. Eugene Auger, trustee and leading officer in the society; Mrs. Edouard Chevassus; Miss Lina Auger; Mrs. Cutter; and Andre LaFarge. This image was taken by Edouard Chevassus and given to Wine Institute by Florence Cutter in the 1940's.
